This week, we're listening back to a discussion of taboo sexual practices, and whether they're really as unusual as we think. Psychologist and author Jesse Bering talks about his book, "Perv: The Sexual Deviant in All of Us." And we'll speak to Nicole Prause, Principal Investigator at UCLA's Sexual Psychophysiology and Affective Neuroscience (SPAN) Laboratory, on her neurological perspective that raises doubts about self-reported sex addiction.

Jesse Bering

Jesse Bering is the author of "The Belief Instinct" and "Why Is the Penis Shaped Like That?" His writing and research have appeared in Slate, Scientific American, New York magazine, Cosmopolitan, The Guardian, and The New Republic, among other publications, and have been featured by NPR, Playboy Radio, and more. Bering is the former director of the Institute of Cognition and Culture at Queen’s University, Belfast, and began his career as a professor at the University of Arkansas. He lives in Ithaca, New York.

Nicole Prause

Nicole Prause is the Principal Investigator at UCLA's Sexual Psychophysiology and Affective Neuroscience (SPAN) Laboratory. She obtained her PhD at Indiana University, Bloomington with joint supervision from The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction in 2007. Her studies concentrated in neuroscience and statistics. She completed her internship at the Boston Consortium. Her primary rotations were in neuropsychological assessment and behavioral medicine. She currently is research faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles with a continuing appointment as Research Scientist at the Mind Research Network in Albuquerque, NM.
